Minutes of February 2010 meeting

Welcome Guests: Sarah Skotarek, Bill & Annette Richmond, George Forest, Ken Simpson, Dayna Armstrong, Colin Nielsen, Dan & Liz Kingsley from the Motorcycle Ride For Dad.

This was Norm & Chris’s last meeting as President and Vice President for our Chapter. A big thank you went out to the Members that volunteered to let their names stand for our new Executive Committee.  They are:

President – Ed Skotarek

Vice President – Jim Wight

Treasurer – Gary Straughan

Secretary – Cliff Brougham

Sgt At Arms – Tom Goss

Quartermaster – Terry Wolfe

Good Will Liaison – Ron Raymond

Also big thanks went out to Terry Wolfe who reluctantly volunteered to let his name stand for the V.P. position when no one else volunteered.  Terry immediately withdrew his nomination when Jim stepped up to the plate.

The 2010 dues have been paid in full in including our renewals, West Coast Conference dues and Board of Governor’s Special fund.  Total funds paid out $991.47 Canadian.

Our Chapter is financially in very good shape with money available to donate to several Charities in 2010.

The BOG Special Fund sits at approximately $176,000.  This seems like a considerable amount of money as the BOG traditionally spends about $5,000 – 10,000 annually on payouts for Members having accidents while enroute to or from International or Conference events.

Norm canvassed all West Coast Presidents to get their input on having anyone attending these events, not just members, but paid up guests and relatives also be covered in the event of an accident.  The overwhelming reply was in favour of changes being made.  Norm sent an email to the BOG suggesting a review of the present criteria.

We will be losing one of our members in the near future.  Ron R.’s wife has accepted a nursing position in Saskatchewan and he will be relocating there upon the sale of the family residence in Nanaimo.

Randy G., missed the meeting as he is presently working at the Vancouver Olympics.  He is then being posted to Afghanistan in June for a tour with the Military.  We all join together to wish Randy a safe return home.

Incoming President, Ed Skotarek, presented Norm with a wonderful plaque acknowledging his four years serving and representing our Chapter as President.  Ed also presented Norm and Sue with a Gift Certificate for a night’s  accommodation and dinner at an up-scale resort in Nanaimo.  These presentations took Norm and Sue by surprise.  Norm thanked everyone for their support during his tenure as President and a special thanks to those who donated to purchase the plaque and contributed to the great departing gift.

Guest Liz KINGLSEY, chair for the Motorcycle Ride For Dad, gave a very informative talk on the upcoming MCRFD scheduled for May 15th in Langford.  Liz advised that the ride is now 10 years old and has spread from the original city of Ottawa to 27 cities in Canada.  To date over $5 million has been raised for education and research of prostate cancer in men. Liz stressed the importance of all men over 40 years of age to get annual prostate checks and blood tests to detect this disease in the earliest stages.  Last year in Canada, 1242 men died of prostate cancer in Canada.  If diagnosed early enough, there is a 90% chance of full recovery.

Liz answered all our questions on this year’s upcoming ride. The ride is scheduled to cover approximately 250 km’s this year with a poker run and lunch provided along the way.  There will also be a Show N Shine at this year’s event as well as many prizes. The last two years our Chapter has participated both financially, as a Bronze Member sponsor, as well as assisting with traffic control and blocking of intersections for the ride.  It is anticipated that there will be over 1000 motorcycles in this year’s event.  Liz requested our assistance again this year to help make this a fantastic event.  All monies raised go to Education and Research into Prostate cancer with the majority of the funds remaining on Vancouver Island. The funds do not go to Hospice Programs. There is also a 8400 km ride across Canada scheduled from Aug 1- Aug 26th terminating in Victoria for the Motorcycle Ride for Dad. Liz then presented our Chapter with a plaque for our participation in the 2009 ride.

50/50 draw of $65.00 won by Alex W.

Secondary draws won by Connie B. and Rawn P.  Both winners will have to supply a secondary draw item at a future meeting.

Secretary's Report

Great meeting as usual. This month we elected our new executive. They are listed below along with their appropriate e-mail addresses. Some hearty souls rode their bikes to this meeting and then pretended not to be cold. Other wiser members arrived warm and dry via 4 wheels. I have noticed lately that the usual Harley bashing has abated somewhat. I believe that this would be due to the increased number of Harleys in the club. As your re-elected secretary, I'm happy to see that the majority of you are listening to my sage advice and purchasing superior quality merchandise. I think the time is now appropriate to start bashing selected metric motorcycles. We shouldn't simply bash all metric bikes because there is strength in numbers. We should start with one particular make and model and then move on to the next, etc. We should continue this onslaught until we have rid our club of these vile, imported machines. Once we have successfully completed this cleansing, we can then move on to what kind of 4 wheeled vehicle you drive and then perhaps where you choose to live? The possibilities are endless! What fun!

Tongue Firmly Planted In Cheek,
